2017 Grand Opening of the Chippawa Lions Park Tennis Courts

Niagara Falls, ON, September 6 – The City of Niagara Falls is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of the Chippawa Lions Park Tennis Courts on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Join us with a ceremonial group tennis serve at 5:45 pm to open the new tennis facility at Chippawa Lions Park, located at 3970 Welland Street in Chippawa.

Chippawa Lions Park is a 13 acre Community Park in the south end of Niagara Falls that has provided a wide variety of recreational opportunities and special events for many years. Due to high usage volumes and age, the park was in need of improvements. Staff worked with the Chippawa Lions Club (the custodians of the park) to develop an updated master plan for the park.

Phase One (1) completion was recently celebrated on August 3rd with a ribbon cutting ceremony, and now it is time to celebrate the opening of the new tennis courts.

The Grand Opening will include:

· Professional tennis instructors showcasing youth and adult group lessons. · Pro/Am tennis doubles match including Mayor Diodati and Councillor Pietrangelo. · A team tennis tournament with all in attendance invited to take part. · Wilson racquet demonstrations. · Racquets and balls will be available on-site. · Food and drinks available. · Prize give-a-ways.

The next phases of the master plan will include resurfacing the exercise pathway, renovations to the senior ball diamond, a new picnic shelter, parking improvements and tree planting.

Official Launch of Canada 150 Celebrations in Niagara Falls

This year will be a milestone for Canada and Niagara Falls as we mark 150 years since confederation. The City of Niagara Falls and the Canada 150 Committee joined together today to officially launch celebrations in honour of the year-long sesquicentennial festivities in the City.

The event, held in Rosberg Park, began with an official flag raising with Canadian legend, Leafs goaltender Johnny Bower and Mayor Jim Diodati hoisting the Canada 150 flag. The Niagara Falls Canada 150 logo was revealed, in addition to the official launch of the website, www.150inthefalls.com.

Mayor Diodati announced that profiles of citizens living and working in Niagara Falls and their love of Canada will be highlighted on the official website throughout the year through a series called “Our People of 150”. “We want to celebrate this milestone not only by bringing people together at community events throughout the year, but by shining a light on the interesting and moving stories of the people of Niagara Falls and what makes them uniquely Canadian,” he said. The first person highlighted is student, and Mayors Youth Advisory member, Egan Henderson.

Niagara Falls residents, along with all Canadians, will have an opportunity to mark the 150th anniversary of our Country through a variety of events and celebrations planned in Niagara Falls throughout the year. Mayor Diodati elaborated on a list of the first 30 of 150 activities and events taking place in Niagara Falls to celebrate the sesquicentennial. The City of Niagara Falls, in partnership with the Downtown BIA, will be hosting a very special 3 day Canada 150 Celebration in Niagara Falls from June 30 through to July 2 in 2017.

To celebrate the first of the 150 events, Anthony Annunziata, organizer of the Ice Wine Festival in Niagara Falls, greeted the Mayor with an ice wine cheer. The Ice Wine Festival in Niagara Falls starts at 7pm tonight at the Scotiabank Convention Centre, and will run till Sunday January 29th. Visit www.150inthefalls.com to view a listing of the first 30 events.

To round out our first day of celebrations, at 5:00pm the Toronto and Canadian Niagara Power Plants will be illuminated in patriotic red and white, sponsored by NPC & WFOL, and the Oakes Hotel will be the focus of a dramatic Canada 150 Illumination. Then, at 9pm, a spectacular fireworks show will be ignited over the Falls in celebration of Canada 150, featuring double the fireworks followed by a stunning brocade of gold for a magnificent finale not to be missed. The Canada 150 Committee, comprised of event professionals, City of Niagara Falls, Niagara Parks Commission (NPC), Winter Festival of Lights (WFOL), Niagara Peninsula Energy (NPEI) and Niagara Falls Tourism staff, BIA representatives and volunteers under the leadership of Chair Chris Dabrowski are planning the Niagara Falls Canada 150 celebrations.
